You don鈥檛 have to be a gearhead. Or a car dealer. Or a technology maven. Auto shows with all that gleaming metal don鈥檛 have to make you starry-eyed or soft at the knees.

If you are a practical, deliberate car shopper, attending an auto show 鈥 or shows 鈥 just makes sense.

I am none of the things listed above, but last year my wife and I visited two car-and-truck shows 鈥 the Dallas Auto Show in March and the Texas State Fair Auto Show in October. And yes, we were on a mission to narrow the choices for our next car (to replace a 15-year-old Dodge Caravan).

You can be just as prepared by following the advice below, which combines Jamie Page Deaton鈥檚 7 Steps to Shopping at an Auto Show at U.S. News Best Cars Blog and our personal experience:

Prioritize your goals

鈥淲ith almost every car offered for sale in the United States at many auto shows, if you鈥檙e planning on shopping, you need a game plan,鈥 Deaton wrote. Considering the number of vehicles, it鈥檚 easy to see how a shopper could be overwhelmed without a list of 鈥渕ust-see cars鈥 at the show.

Map out your visit

鈥淐ar shows are large events, so knowing where the cars you鈥檙e interested in are located will save you a lot of time and a lot of steps,鈥 the blogger wrote. Using a map of the venue is essential, we found, or you鈥檙e liable to end up wandering aimlessly amid the motorific eye candy.

Don鈥檛 be shy

鈥淥ne of the best things about car shows is the access you have to the cars themselves,鈥 Deaton writes. 鈥淎t an auto show, most mainstream models will be open for visitors to explore.鈥 We spent a lot of time checking the inside and outside of several mainstream vehicles we are considering.

Compare, compare, compare

鈥淪hopping for a car under normal circumstances is tiring 鈥 At an auto show, however, comparable cars are just a short walk away,鈥 advises the writer. Well, a fairly short walk, anyway.

Shop in private

We enjoyed the opportunity for low- to no-pressure shopping but appreciated availability of manufacturer鈥檚 representatives when we wanted them. 鈥淢ost [sales people] leave visitors alone,鈥 Deaton writes. 鈥淭hat means you can take your time and really explore a car.鈥

Your time will come

You may have to be patient to get into some more popular models, but the wait usually isn鈥檛 unreasonable, and other visitors tend to wait patiently for their turn.

Follow up

鈥淲hile you can鈥檛 buy a car at most car shows, you can set an appointment for a test drive 鈥 with any dealer staff who may be there,鈥 writes the blogger. 鈥淵ou can also take home more information.鈥 While we haven鈥檛 graduated to test drives yet, we know better where we鈥檙e headed.

Have some fun

There鈥檚 a lot to see at a car show, so don鈥檛 get so focused on your mission that you miss out on the rest. Remain open to models you didn鈥檛 have on your list, and take in the luxury and exotic cars.

If you鈥檙e still not convinced, taking in a car show is the way to go, read our previous blog post, Why you should attend an auto show if you鈥檙e shopping for a new vehicle.
